Amit Sethi Receives NIH R01 Award to Advance Stroke Recovery Research

Amit Sethi, PhD, OTR/L, associate professor in the Department of Occupational and Recreational Therapies at the University of Utah, has received a new National Institutes of Health R01 award for his project, “A Novel Multimodal Approach to Promote Motor Recovery and Plasticity after Stroke.” The award will support a clinical trial testing whether a new therapy approach can help people with moderate-to-severe stroke improve movement in their arms and hands. The study will combine a novel noninvasive brain stimulation with functional electircal stimulation-assisted task practice, which is a therapy approach that uses gentle electrical signals to help activate weak muscles while a person practices everyday movements.

Stroke affects about 800,000 people each year in the United States, and many survivors continue to experience chronic arm and hand impairments that limit daily activities. Sethi’s study aims to address a critical gap in rehabilitation by testing a novel multimodal therapy designed to support the brain and nervous system’s ability to adapt and recover. The project will evaluate changes in arm and hand movement, daily function and nervous system activity.Sethi is a licensed occupational therapist whose research focuses on noninvasive neuromodulation, biomechanics, motor control and neurorehabilitation.

He directs the Neural Plasticity Rehabilitation and Movement Dynamics Lab, also known as the NeRD Lab, where his team studies the mechanisms of recovery and develops interventions and technologies to improve motor function after stroke. His work combines brain stimulation, functional electrical stimulation, motion capture, electromyography and emerging telerehabilitation tools to better understand and improve arm and hand recovery.

About Amit Sethi, PhD, OTR/L Amit Sethi, PhD, OTR/L, is an associate professor in the Department of Occupational and Recreational Therapies at the University of Utah. His research focuses on neuroplasticity, motor recovery, upper extremity rehabilitation and technology-based approaches to improving function after stroke. Through the NeRD Lab, Sethi and his team work to develop evidence-based interventions that support independence, participation and quality of life for stroke survivors.
