Utah Tech University held a ribbon cutting and concert on Friday, Aug. 28, to open the renovated and expanded America First Performing Arts Center to the community. The event celebrated the community partnerships that facilitated the facility's transformation into a state-of-the-art venue.
The renovation project increased the facility by 15,500 square feet and included expansions to the lobby, box office, concessions, and restrooms. New additions include an event space to accommodate larger audiences, a balcony with additional seating, center aisles for easier access, and additional ADA seating. Technical upgrades featured a new sound booth, updated LED theatrical lighting, and enhanced acoustics. Back-of-house improvements included expanded green rooms, dressing rooms, and rehearsal spaces.
The project was funded through a $5 million donation from America First Credit Union, a $28 million appropriation from the Utah State Legislature, a $1.3 million contribution from Washington County, and various community donors. Thayne Shaffer, president and CEO of America First Credit Union, stated that the center was designed to provide students, artists, and families across Southern Utah opportunities to gather and experience the arts.
The renovated venue will serve as the official home for the Utah Tech University College of the Arts, UT Live, Southwest Symphony, and the Southern Utah Heritage Choir. The expansion efforts began when the Southern Utah Performing Arts Foundation sought a facility to meet the needs of the Southwest Symphony and Southern Utah Heritage Choir, proposing a partnership with Utah Tech University.
During the celebration, UT Live hosted a concert featuring pianist William Joseph alongside Madilyn Paige and Travis Garland, with a special guest appearance by Derek Hough.
Originally completed in 1986 as the M.K. Cox Performing Arts Center through a donation from Dr. Mervyn K. and Sue Cox, the venue has served as a performing arts center for four decades. To honor the legacy of the Cox family, the auditorium is now named the Cox Grand Theatre.
