The Provo City Council unanimously approved a zone change during a meeting on Tuesday night to allow for new student housing at an abandoned apartment site. The development, located east of BYU's campus, will transform the vacated complex into a residential area.
The council voted to rezone the Park Plaza development, located at 910 N. 900 East, to Campus Residential. Under the new zoning, Cole West plans to construct a housing complex that includes 146 units. The six-story building is expected to provide 523 beds for students.
The decision concludes a multiyear saga regarding the property. The abandoned apartment building had previously become blighted due to vandalism and two incidents of reckless burning.
The approved redevelopment aims to revitalize the area near the university campus.
