The Timpanogos School District Board of Education unanimously approved a districtwide grade reconfiguration during a vote on Wednesday evening, October 21, 2026, according to an October 22 report.
The new plan, which is scheduled to take effect for the 2027–2028 academic year, establishes a standardized structure for the district.
Under the approved reconfiguration, elementary schools will serve grades K–5, middle schools will serve grades 6–8, and high schools will serve grades 9–12.
District leadership stated the update aligns the district with the most common school configuration model nationwide to support academic, social, and emotional growth. Superintendent Dr. Joe Jensen said evaluating school robustness led the district to determine these changes have the potential to strengthen schools at all three levels.
The shift moves 9th graders to high school campuses to provide earlier access to graduation credits, Career & Technical Education (CTE) pathways, advanced foreign languages, visual and performing arts, athletics, Advanced Placement (AP), and Concurrent Enrollment (CE) pipelines.
Moving 6th graders to middle school is intended to create a dedicated 6–8 model tailored to early adolescent needs. Additionally, removing 6th grade from elementary buildings is expected to provide local elementary schools with more spatial and operational flexibility to balance class sizes.
The board's decision provides school leaders, educators, and staff with nearly two full school years to prepare for the transition. The district is also developing welcoming frameworks for students in grades 6, 7, 9, and 10 who will be transitioning to new campuses.
District leadership is also continuing to evaluate facility usage and potential boundary adjustments as part of the planning process.
To assist families with the upcoming changes, the district has distributed a Parent Support Toolkit. Community members can submit questions or feedback to district leadership by visiting timpsd.org.
