Fervo Energy and Google have signed a 396-megawatt power purchase agreement to support the development of the Cape Station enhanced geothermal systems GeoCluster in Utah, according to a September 1 statement. The agreement is expected to facilitate the delivery of carbon-free power to serve as a foundational building block for a potential data center in the state.
The Cape Station project is expected to come online in 2028. As part of the agreement, Fervo has provided Google with an option to expand its offtake by approximately 600 MW, which would bring the total to nearly 1 GW by June 2030. Final plans for the data center remain subject to commercial conditions, local and state approvals, and engineering feasibility.
Tim Latimer, CEO and Co-Founder of Fervo Energy, stated that the agreement reinforces that enhanced geothermal systems are ready to power next-generation computing infrastructure. He noted that the partnership allows Fervo to meet customer needs by delivering clean, firm power to large electricity users.
Michael Terrell, Head of Advanced Energy at Google, said the project is expected to drive economic benefits to the local community and help catalyze long-term energy cost reductions by making enhanced geothermal more accessible and affordable.
The partnership between Fervo and Google began with Project Red, a commercial pilot project in Nevada that became operational in 2023. In June 2024, Fervo signed a 115 MW power purchase agreement with Google and NV Energy to help pioneer the Clean Transition Tariff.
The Cape Station expansion is intended to move beyond its initial 100 MW phase through modular, scalable power solutions. Under Utah SB132, the project may provide Fervo and Google with optionality on direct-to-load contracting, subject to regulatory approvals.
