The Dixie and Fishlake National Forests have implemented Stage 2 fire restrictions beginning Friday, June 26, at 12:01 a.m. The decision follows extreme fire danger conditions and an increase in human-caused wildfires in southwest Utah.
Duration of new restrictions
These restrictions will remain in effect until they are rescinded, which typically happens after widespread moisture arrives and fire danger levels decrease.
Reasons for increased fire danger
Dixie National Forest Fire Management Officer Kevin Greenhalgh stated that firefighters are responding to more reports of abandoned campfires. He noted that extremely dry conditions at all elevations could lead to large, challenging fires that threaten communities and the safety of both the public and firefighters, similar to the Cottonwood fire on the Fishlake National Forest.
Affected ranger districts and areas
Weather forecasting models continue to predict drier conditions with high fire danger and a potential for large fires in the foreseeable future. The restrictions apply to the Pine Valley, Cedar City, Powell, and Escalante Ranger Districts in the Dixie National Forest, as well as the Fillmore, Fremont River, Beaver, and Richfield Ranger Districts in the Fishlake National Forest.
Prohibited activities under Stage 2
Under Stage 2 restrictions, several acts are prohibited on National Forest System lands. Building or using campfires, stoves, or grills fueled by charcoal or briquettes is prohibited, except for liquid or gas-fueled devices used in areas cleared of flammable materials within 10 feet. Smoking is also prohibited except inside an enclosed vehicle or building.
Daytime equipment use limitations
From 10:00 A.M. to 10:00 P.M., the use of generators, chainsaws, or other internal combustion engine equipment capable of igniting a fire is prohibited. Additionally, welding, grinding, or using torches with open flames is restricted during these hours. Operating motor vehicles off designated roads or trails is also prohibited unless parking in an area without vegetation within 10 feet of the vehicle.
Certain prohibitions remain in place regardless of the Stage 2 order, including the use of fireworks, explosives, blasting, and incendiary ammunition. Engines must also be equipped with a properly maintained spark arresting device.
Fire restrictions may vary among agencies and do not apply to incorporated cities. Officials recommend contacting local city fire departments for specific information regarding towns and checking Utahfireinfo.gov for agency-specific maps and restrictions.
