The National Weather Service in Salt Lake City issued a severe thunderstorm warning for southwestern Washington County on August 14. The warning was in effect until 9:30 AM MDT.
At 8:42 AM MDT, radar indicated a severe thunderstorm located near the Virgin River Campground, approximately 7 miles north of Virgin River Gorge. The storm was moving north at 20 mph.
Hazards associated with the storm included quarter-sized hail and wind gusts of 60 mph. The National Weather Service noted that hail damage to vehicles was expected, and wind damage to trees, siding, and roofs was possible.
Impacted locations included Snow Canyon State Park, Ivins, and Santa Clara. The warning area also included Utah Route 18 between mile markers 9 and 10.
For protection, officials advised moving to an interior room on the lowest floor of a building.
