The Pittsburgh Penguins concluded a difficult road trip with a 5-4 loss to the Utah Mammoth on Saturday, according to a report published October 13.
After starting the season with two wins, the Penguins have since reached a record of 1-6-1.
Captain Sidney Crosby stated that the team failed to put a complete game together despite holding leads during the contest. The Penguins' top unit, consisting of Erik Karlsson, Sidney Crosby, Bryan Rust, Rickard Rakell, and Tommy Novak, scored early when a shot from Karlsson deflected off a Mammoth player for his first goal of the season.
Rickard Rakell later tied the game with a power-play goal, marking his first goal of the season. This performance continued a recent trend where the Penguins' power play has gone 3-for-3 since previously struggling with a 0-for-20 run against the Golden Knights.
The Utah Mammoth took control of the game with multiple goals, including a 3-2 lead following a shot from Nate Schmidt that screened goaltender Arturs Silovs. The Penguins attempted a late comeback with goals from Egor Chinakhov and Declan Carlile, narrowing the deficit to one goal with five minutes remaining. A late shot by Karlsson hit the post in a failed attempt to tie the game.
The game also saw significant roster shifts and injuries. Egor Chinakhov returned to the lineup after missing two games due to a lower-body injury. However, Bryan Rust suffered a lower-body injury during the second period and did not return to the game. Coach Muse noted that the team must prioritize defensive consistency and winning battles around the netfront.
The Penguins are scheduled to fly to Pittsburgh on Tuesday and will hold practice on Wednesday. The team is set to host Florida on Thursday.
