An extreme heat watch has been issued by the National Weather Service for Salt Lake City and surrounding areas, effective from Saturday afternoon through Sunday evening. The watch warns of dangerously hot conditions with temperatures potentially reaching up to 105 degrees.
The weather alert impacts several regions including the Northern Wasatch Front, Salt Lake Valley, Tooele and Rush Valleys, Utah Valley, and the Western Uinta Basin. Specific locations included in the watch are Grantsville, Payson, Provo, Duchesne, Vernon, West Jordan, Roosevelt, Tooele, Sandy, Salt Lake City, Ogden, Lehi, and Bountiful.
During these extreme heat events, heat-related illnesses increase significantly. Overnight lows are expected to remain in the low to mid-70s.
Officials recommend drinking plenty of fluids, staying in air-conditioned rooms, staying out of the sun, and checking on relatives and neighbors. It is advised not to leave young children or pets in unattended vehicles, as car interiors can reach lethal temperatures in minutes.
