Eastbound I-8to closures are scheduled at the I-84 and US-89 interchange in Weber County due to restrictions set by Union Pacific Railroad. The Utah Department of Transportation will utilize these windows to place girders onto the base foundation for the new eastbound bridge structure.
Specific Closure Dates and Times
The first closure is scheduled as an overnight event from 9:30 AM on Sunday, June 14, through 4:00 AM on Monday, June 15. A second round of closures will occur during the afternoon and evening from Sunday, June 21, through Tuesday, June 23, between 2:30 PM and 9:30 PM.
Additional Nighttime Lane Closures
Additionally, nighttime eastbound lane closures are planned for the night of Monday, June 15, and Tuesday, June 16, from 8:00 PM to 5:00 AM.
Bridge Reconstruction Project Details
The ongoing project involves reconstructing both the eastbound and westbound I-84 Weber River and Union Pacific Railroad bridges located two miles east of the mouth of Weber Canyon. The new structures are expected to have a service life of 75 years and will feature improved geometry and detailing to create a safer facility for travelers.
Driver Instructions and Lane Widths
During single lane closures, the open lane will be restricted to a width of 12 feet. Drivers should be prepared for barrels on the roadway used to guide traffic past construction zones. Additional eastbound shoulder and outside lane closures may occur over the next several months, with specific dates and times yet to be determined.
Recreational Trail Closure Notice
For those using recreational paths, the walking and biking trail located beneath I-84 along the river is currently closed for safety while construction continues.
Current Project Phase Timeline
The project is currently in Phase 2, which includes building foundations, placing girders, and setting the deck. This phase is expected to continue through July 2026.
Looking ahead, a traffic crossover is planned from October 2026 through August 2027. During that period, eastbound I-84 will maintain two lanes with minimal delays, while westbound I-84 will be reduced to one lane at all times, which may result in slower travel and delays.
Phase 3 is scheduled to run from October 2026 through September 2027 and will involve the demolition of the old eastbound bridge and the construction of the new westbound bridge.
