The National Weather Service in Salt Lake City issued a tornado warning for east central Tooele County in northern Utah on August 13. The warning was in effect until 6:30 PM MDT.
At 5:55 PM MDT, a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado was located 7 miles southwest of Tooele Army Depot, or 11 miles south of Grantsville. The storm was moving east at 50 mph.
Other locations impacted by the tornadic thunderstorm included Rush Valley, Stockton, and Erda. The storm was expected to be near Tooele and Tooele Army Depot around 6:00 PM MDT.
The hazard was identified through radar indicated rotation. Potential impacts included dangerous flying debris, damage to roofs, windows, and vehicles, and likely tree damage. Mobile homes could be damaged or destroyed.
Officials advised individuals to take cover immediately by moving to a basement or an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building and avoiding windows. Those outdoors, in a mobile home, or in a vehicle were advised to move to the closest substantial shelter to protect themselves from flying debris.
