The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) manages 19 wild horse and burro herd management areas spanning nearly 2.4 million acres in Utah. The combined appropriate management level for all herd management areas in the state is 1,956 animals.
Utah maintains several facilities to house animals, including two contracted off-range corrals for wild horses with a capacity of 3,750, one off-range corral/pasture for wild burros with a capacity of 2,000, and one BLM corral facility with a capacity of 300. These facilities have a total holding capacity of 6,050 animals.
As of May 18, 2022, these facilities were housing and caring for approximately 2,745 animals, consisting of 2,455 horses and 290 burros. Additionally, an off-range pasture near Fountain Green, Utah, was caring for approximately 476 wild horses as of May 18, 2022.
Since 1971, the BLM has removed approximately 17,942 animals from public rangelands in Utah to maintain healthy horses and burros on healthy public rangelands. During this time, BLM Utah has placed 9,288 wild horses and burros into private care.
Animals removed from public rangelands are offered to the public for adoption, while unadopted animals are cared for on open pastures for the remainder of their lives.
Scheduled gathers for various fiscal years include the 2026 Bible Springs Complex Wild Horse Gather, the 2026 Canyonlands HMA Bait Gather, and the 2026 Confusion Wild Horse Gather. Other scheduled activities include the 2025 Canyonlands HMA Wild Burro Gather, the 2025 Muddy Creek Wild Horse Gather, and the 2025 North Hills JMA Wild Horse Emergency Gather.
