The American Red Cross is urging the public to donate blood and platelets to prevent shortages as the holiday season approaches. The organization is specifically requesting donations from individuals with type O blood to ensure a steady supply for hospitals during the upcoming fall and holiday period.
Donor Incentives and Rewards
To encourage community participation, the Red Cross announced an incentive program for donors. Individuals who donate between Oct. 19 and Nov. 22, 2026, are eligible to receive up to $20 in value through rewards. This includes a $10 Amazon gift card sent via email and 500 bonus points that can be redeemed for a $10 e-gift card through the Blood Donor Rewards program.
Health Screening Opportunities
In addition to gift card incentives, the Red Cross is utilizing November, which is National Diabetes Awareness Month, to provide health education. During the month of November, successful donors will be offered free A1C testing, a medical test commonly used to screen for prediabetes and diabetes. The organization noted that donors should not fast before their donation appointment.
Critical Blood Type Needs
The organization emphasized that while all blood types are necessary to maintain a reliable supply for patients, type O blood is particularly critical. Maintaining scheduled appointments for blood and platelet donations is described as crucial for ensuring hospitals have the medical tools required to care for patients throughout the fall season.
Eligibility Requirements
Prospective donors must meet specific eligibility requirements to contribute. In most states, individuals must be at least 17 years of age, though 16-year-olds may donate with parental consent depending on state law. Donors must also weigh at least 110 pounds and be in generally good health. High school students and other donors aged 18 and younger are subject to specific height and weight requirements.
Streamlining the Donation Process
To streamline the donation process, the Red Cross recommends using the RapidPass tool. This feature allows donors to complete their pre-donation reading and health history questionnaire online before arriving at a blood drive, which can save time during the appointment. Documentation, such as a driver’s license or a blood donor card, along with one other form of identification, is required at check-in.
Volunteer Opportunities
Beyond direct blood donation, the Red Cross highlighted opportunities for community members to support their mission through volunteerism. Individuals can apply to become volunteer blood donor ambassadors, who assist by greeting and checking in donors to ensure a positive experience. Additionally, volunteers can serve as transportation specialists to help deliver lifesaving blood products to nearby hospitals.
Scheduling Appointments
Appointments can be scheduled through several methods, including the American Red Cross Blood Donor App, by visiting RedCrossBlood.org, calling 1-800-RED CROSS, or by using the Blood Donor Skill on an Alexa Echo device.
