Idaho currently holds a 2-5 record and is 2-2 in the Big Sky Conference. The team recently secured notable victories against No. 1-ranked and reigning national champion Montana State, 35-34, and seventh-ranked Montana, 42-35. Following the win against Montana, the Vandals fell to Weber State, 38-27, before returning to win against the Grizzlies in Missoula. Southern Utah enters the game with a 3-4 record and a 2-2 record in the Big Sky Conference. The Thunderbirds have previously defeated Weber State, 47-42, and UC Davis, 38-17, while falling to Montana, 28-21. Specifically, Floyd Chalk leads the league with 1,035 rushing yards and nine touchdowns, averaging 6.6 yards per carry. Coach Ford emphasized that the Vandals' defense must remain disciplined with assignments and eyes to prevent being exploited by the Thunderbirds' rushing attack. He also identified senior tight end Joshua Accord, a transfer from Appalachian State with six touchdowns, as a significant red zone target for the opposition. Defensive coordinator Lee Stalker stated that the recent victory against Montana provides a boost of confidence for the program's future.
