The Real Monarchs fell 4-2 to the Tacoma Defiente on Sunday night, July 19, at America First Field. Despite an early lead provided by a debut goal from midfielder Lionel Djiro, the Monarchs were unable to withstand a second-half surge from the visitors.
Early Lead Lost to Injury and Defiance Attack
The match began with significant momentum for the home side. Just nine minutes into the contest, Djiro—earning his first professional start—scored after receiving a no-look backheel pass from midfielder Owen Anderson. The 22-year-old Ivory Coast native sent a powerful shot into the bottom right corner to give the Monarchs a 1-0 advantage.
Tacoma Dominates Second Half
The momentum shifted in the 31st minute when defender Linkon Ream was forced off the pitch due to an injury, replaced by Chance Cowell. Shortly after the substitution, Tacoma Defiance capitalized on the defensive shift, scoring in the 34th minute via Charlie Gaffney and again in the 39th minute through Mark Bronnik to take a 2-1 lead into halftime.
Late Rally Falls Short
Tacoma extended its advantage in the second half with goals from Mark Bronnik in the 50th minute and Rafael Jauregui in the 55th minute. The Monarchs attempted a late rally, finding a goal in the 69th minute when Izzy Amparo tapped in a ball following a corner kick delivery by Antonio Riquelme and a header by Omar Marquez.
Recent Road Struggles
The July 19 defeat follows a period of inconsistent results for the Monarchs. On June 27, the team suffered a 3-1 loss to Ventura County FC in Thousand Oaks, California. During that match, Spanish forward Jesús Barea had returned to the starting lineup after an injury, scoring a goal in the 45th minute following a long pass from goalkeeper Trace Alphin.
A Difficult Summer Stretch
In the June 27 match against Ventura County, the Monarchs also faced significant personnel changes due to injuries. Goalkeeper Trace Alphin was replaced by Max Kerkvliet after sustaining an injury during play.
