As summer approaches, Utah agencies are implementing seasonal environmental restrictions, including the official start of closed fire season in Weber County and ongoing water conservation appeals in Salt Lake City.
Weber County fire season begins
The Weber Fire District announced that Utah's closed fire season officially began on June 1 and is scheduled to run through October 31, 2026. The district noted that the spring open burn window is now closed due to high wildfire risks facing Weber County and much of the state.
Salt Lake City water conservation efforts
In Salt Lake City, Mayor Erin Mendenhall has previously urged residents to practice water conservation as the Great Salt Lake faces historic lows. In an April 2026 newsletter, the Mayor requested voluntary usage reductions amid ongoing drought conditions.
Salt Lake City sustainability initiatives
Sustainability efforts in Salt Lake City also include a new clean energy program and incentives for electric landscaping, as reported in the Mayor's April 2026 update. Additionally, the city celebrated the planting of more than 6,000 trees on the west side.
Regional land and park management updates
Regional land and park management remains a priority for local governments. Uintah County is currently managing the Ashley National Forest Plan Revision, according to its Community Development Department. Meanwhile, in Farmington, seasonal fire restrictions are in effect at Farmington Pond Park, where open fires have been prohibited from June 1 through October 31 annually since at least June 2023.
