Texas Tech has reached a 6-0 start halfway through the regular season, joining BYU and No. 10 Utah as undefeated members of the Big 12. According to an October 20 report, the Red Raiders have achieved this undefeated status differently than last year when they won their first Big 12 Conference championship and reached the College Football Playoff.
The No. 8 Red Raiders are settling in with quarterback Will Hammond, who has 1,334 yards and six touchdowns passing since recovering from an ACL injury last October. The team is coming off a 53-25 win over Arizona State, which was the only Big 12 team to defeat them last year. Unlike last season, when Texas Tech averaged a margin of nearly 35 points per win, many of their victories this season have not been lopsided. Their wins have included a 33-10 victory over Abilene Christian, a 29-7 win at Colorado, and a 28-26 win against No. 14 Houston.
The Big 12 currently holds three 6-0 teams, representing half of the remaining undefeated FBS teams alongside No. 1 Miami, No. 9 UCLA, and James Madison. BYU, led by head coach Kalani Sitake, is 6-0 for the third consecutive year following a win over No. 2 Notre Dame. The Cougars are playing without injured running back LJ Martin, who sustained a lower-body injury on Oct. 3, 2026, and may be sidelined until mid-November.
Historically, the Big 12 has seen few undefeated regular seasons, with only Nebraska in 1997, Oklahoma in 2000, and Texas in 2005 finishing undefeated in the league's previous 30 seasons. While TCU and Kansas State are the only current Big 12 teams to have completed a regular season without a conference loss, neither progressed to win the conference championship game in overtime.
The annual Holy War game between BYU and Utah is scheduled for Nov. 7 in Salt Lake City, while Texas Tech will not face either team during the regular season.
