No. 8 BYU defeated the Iowa State Cyclones 24-10 during a Homecoming game at Lavell Edwards Stadium on Friday night, according to a report published October 9, 2026. The victory marks the first time in program history that the Cougars have started a season 5-0 over three consecutive seasons.
Bear Bachmeier accounted for significant yardage, totaling 329 passing yards on 22 of 30 attempts and 109 rushing yards. He became the first BYU quarterback since Taysom Hill to record 300-plus passing yards and 100-plus rushing yards in the same game. His 329 passing yards were the most the Cyclones have allowed in a single game this season. Bachmeier's scoring contributions included two passing touchdowns and a career-long 39-yard rush late in the fourth quarter.
The BYU offense saw contributions from several players, including true freshman wide receiver Legend Glasker, who had five receptions for 99 yards and a touchdown, including a 75-yard reception. Kyler Kasper recorded three catches for 40 yards and a touchdown, while junior tight end Walker Lyons had five receptions for a career-best 61 yards. BYU head coach Kalani Sitake stated that while the team was happy with the win, the offense lacked efficiency, noting the team was 0-for-3 on fourth downs.
The BYU defense held Iowa State to 200 yards of total offense, representing the Cyclones' fewest yardage total since 2018. In the first half, the defense limited Iowa State to 49 yards, the program's lowest half-yardage total since 2017. Defensive leaders included Faletau Satuala with seven total tackles, a pass breakup, and a quarterback hurry. Sacks were recorded by Cade Uluave, Jake Clifton, Hunter Clegg, and Anisi Purcell, while Ace Kaufusi recorded a solo sack.
No. 8 BYU is scheduled to host No. 3 Notre Dame at Lavell Edwards Stadium on Oct. 17 at 5:30 p.m. MDT. If the rankings remain unchanged, it will be the first matchup between two Top-10 teams in Provo in BYU program history.
