Introductions
Members introduced themselves by name, something they enjoy doing, and something no one would know about them.
School Community Council Overview
Drew, the new teacher representative, explained the purpose of the council, focusing on school land trust funds and student academic needs.
His presentation reiterated that the council is responsible for data review, goal setting, and overseeing fund usage to support students and the school / district.
Meeting procedures were outlined, noting that agendas must be posted one week in advance and minutes must be kept for three years.
Meeting Schedule and Rules of Order
The council agreed to meet on the first Tuesday of each month at 3:30 PM, excluding December and April.
Drew presented the proposed rules of order, specifically detailing election procedures for the chair and vice chair.
The procedure requires a parent to serve as chair and allows for secret ballots if more than two people are nominated.
Council Elections
The council conducted elections for leadership positions following the established nomination process.
Tiffany was unanimously elected as the Council Chair.
Perry was unanimously elected as the Vice Chair.
SLT Budget and Academic Needs
Darren reviewed the current School Land Trust (SLT) budget allocation of $206,352.09.
Data shows that Multilingual Learners (ML) are lagging in reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills based on WIDA and RISE testing.
The proposed plan allocates $185,000 for two full-time teachers and $20,000 for a 29-hour aide to support ML students.
The additional $1,352.09 was noted as potential rollover funds as allowed by Trustland guidelines or for potential use as the year progresses.
Parent Engagement Strategies
Tiffany suggested increasing parent engagement through home visits, citing the book The Power of Moments where a particular school case study demonstrated growth through connection, especially home visits, significantly improving attendance and test scores.
Darren shared that the Shoreline already conducts summer home visits for approximately 80 incoming seventh graders to build connections as well as select eighth grade students.
The council discussed expanding these visits to include more Multilingual Learners and students with IEPs to foster better relationships from the start.
Adjournment and Closing Discussion
Tiffani called for the meeting to adjourn; Perry seconded the motion which was unanimously confirmed.
Tommy mentioned the next meeting will discuss Safe Routes.
