BYU quarterback Bear Bachmeier has maintained consistent performance through the first four games of 2026, matching the statistical output of his freshman season. According to a report published October 9, the sophomore has led the Cougars to a 4-0 start, mirroring the team's successful beginning from the previous year.
In his first four games as a freshman, Bachmeier completed 68% of his passes for 697 yards, six touchdowns, and zero interceptions, while rushing for 163 yards and four scores. This season, through four games, he has completed 64% of his passes for 704 yards, six touchdowns, and one interception, with 130 rushing yards and four scores on 27 carries.
Recent performance has faced challenges, including a 44.6 quarterback rating against TCU on Saturday, Oct. 3, 2026. BYU offensive coordinator Aaron Roderick noted that constant drizzle and a slippery football made it difficult for players to grip the ball. The offense also dealt with the loss of Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year LJ Martin to injury and several offensive line penalties during the game.
Bachmeier has demonstrated resilience, including a 21-yard touchdown run to clinch a victory against TCU. Former BYU quarterback John Beck observed that Bachmeier possesses a unique ability to run like a running back, using a springy bounce to avoid low tackles. Bachmeier currently holds a 16-2 record as a starter.
The BYU offense will look to build on their momentum on Friday at LaVell Edwards Stadium against Iowa State.
