Recent research developments include the identification of a potential therapeutic target protein that drives metabolic liver disease independent of diet. Scientists found that blocking a specific pathway that triggers an out-of-place antiviral immune response can protect human cells and mouse models against liver injury.
In the field of neurology, researchers identified a brain messenger protein called Arc that helps spread toxic molecules from sick brain cells to healthy ones in mice. Additionally, a study has mapped the gene regulatory networks that drive heart failure through single-cell mapping to aid in the development of new treatments.
The University of Utah has reached several institutional milestones, including the dedication of the $215 million Spencer Fox Eccles School of Medicine. This facility was designed to expand medical education, research, and physician training.
