The Zane Fire sparked on August 18 in a remote section of the Book Cliffs on McCook Ridge in Uintah County. According to Utah Fire Info, the fire is burning on Bureau of Land Management land and is estimated to be between 8 and 10 acres in size. The cause of the blaze remains undetermined.
Responding resources include an Air Attack platform, two Single Engine Air Tankers (SEA
Ts), eight Smokejumpers, and three engines from the United States Wildland Fire Service and the Forest Service. Smoke from the fire has been visible from as far east as Grand Junction and from Highway 40 to the north.
Utah Fire Sense stated that common prevention tactics can help prevent approximately 70% of all wildfires in the state. Recommendations for outdoor recreation include burning only in permitted areas, dousing campfires completely, and clearing dry grass near shooting or parking areas. Experts also suggest monitoring weather conditions and statewide fire restrictions.
