Authorities in Utah are scheduled to hold a news conference Tuesday to link serial killer Ted Bundy to another decades-old homicide.
The Summit County sheriff and county attorney will provide information regarding the investigation, the findings that led to this conclusion, and the decision to close the case, according to the sheriff's office.
While the victim's name has not been released, the 1974 death of 17-year-old Melissa Ann Smith has long been categorized as a cold case in the area.
Bundy has been dead for nearly 40 years, but advances in DNA testing continue to increase the count of his confirmed victims. He killed at least 30 women and girls across multiple states during the 1970s, though many others survived his attacks.
In April, Utah authorities stated Bundy was responsible for the murder of 17-year-old Laura Ann Aime, who disappeared on Halloween in 1974.
Bundy was executed in 1989 by electric chair in Florida for the 1978 murders of two women at the Chi Omega sorority house at Florida State University. During his final days, Bundy provided several confessions, including to crimes previously unknown to police, though not all of those cases have been confirmed.
