The International Olympic Committee announced on October 30, 2026, that the sport and discipline program for the Utah 2034 Olympic Winter Games will be determined in 2028. According to a Salt Lake Chamber report, the decision to advance this determination aligns with the IOC's new Fit for the Future sports program methodology.
The Fit for the Future methodology was introduced in June 2026 and is designed to support a more collaborative and comprehensive evaluation process for sports on the Olympic stage. Darren Hughes, VP of Games Delivery, stated that the Utah 2034 Organizing Committee welcomes the updated timeline and the chance to work closely with the IOC and International Winter Sports Federations throughout the process.
Hughes said the collaboration aims to help shape a sport program that reflects the evolving landscape of winter sport. The goal is to enhance the athlete and fan experience while supporting the continued success of the 2034 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.
The Organizing Committee for the 2034 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, known as Utah 2034, is an independent Utah non-profit responsible for organizing the 2034 Winter Games in Utah. The bid for the 2034 Games was awarded in July 2024. Based in Salt Lake City, the organization's vision is centered around elevating sport, communities, and the Games, building upon the sport legacy from 2002.
Utah 2034 is working to use the Games to catalyze communities across the entire state of Utah and boost interest in winter sport nationally. The Organizing Committee is governed by a 26-member Board with advisory guidance from a Steering Committee and subcommittees.
