LOGAN, Utah – Gone may be the days of college football coaches sleeping in their offices to prepare for the next game — or at least Utah State football head coach Bronco Mendenhall hopes that’s the case.

Implementing AI for program efficiency

As technology and AI continue to reshape workflows across industries, Mendenhall believes they can do the same inside a football program. His goal is to help Utah State’s staff operate with “more efficiency, more accuracy, more productivity, and more yield.”

The second-year Aggies coach joined David James on KSL Sports Zone to discuss ANSRS, a coaching software platform now being implemented in Logan.

For Mendenhall, the value of the program starts with stability in a sport defined by constant change.

“Part of the world of college football now is transitory and change,” Mendenhall said. “53 percent of our roster will be new.”

Maintaining stability through roster turnover

With roster turnover that significant — and coaching staffs changing from year to year — maintaining continuity becomes a priority. Mendenhall said the software can help create that consistency by giving new players and coaches an established system to step into.

“They learn an existing system and are onboarded to it, rather than us having to then have a brand-new system,” Mendenhall said.

Streamlining onboarding for new staff

Mendenhall sees that structure as one of ANSRS’ biggest advantages, especially as Utah State incorporates new coaches such as offensive coordinator Robert Anae. Instead of rebuilding processes from scratch, the program can rely on an existing framework that helps everyone get up to speed more quickly.

“We then save time because of the existing processes that have already been proven, tried, and continue to be updated…” Mendenhall said. “That allows for a baseline to operate from, which makes us faster, and it makes them more comfortable.”
