An extreme heat warning remains in effect for Zion National Park and surrounding areas until 9 PM MDT this evening. The National Weather Service Salt Lake City UT has warned of dangerously hot conditions with temperatures reaching up to 109 degrees.
The warning affects Glen Canyon Recreation Area/Lake Powell, Lower Washington County, and Zion National Park. Specific locations included in this alert are Springdale, Hurricane, St George, Ivins, Big Water, and Bullfrog.
Heat related illnesses increase significantly during extreme heat events. Officials recommend drinking plenty of fluids, staying in air-conditioned rooms, and staying out of the sun. It is advised to check on relatives and neighbors and to take extra precautions when outside, such as wearing lightweight and loose-fitting clothing.
To limit risks, individuals should try to limit strenuous activities to the early morning or evening. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments for those performing outdoor work.
Authorities warn not to leave young children or pets in unattended vehicles, as car interiors can reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is considered an emergency and requires calling 9 1 1.
The current extreme heat warning is scheduled to expire at 9 PM MDT this evening.
