Former BYU running back helps lead Cardinals in win over Chargers

Tyler Allgeier, BYU's single-season rushing leader in 2021, led his new NFL team, the Arizona Cardinals, with the most rushing yards in Week 1.Allgeier was a workhorse back for the Cougars in 2021 and is looking to get back to form for the Cardinals after leading the team in rushing yards, attempts and snaps in a 26-14 upset road win against the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 1 of the NFL season.Allgeier rushed for 61 yards in 17 attempts at 3.6 yards per carry along with two receptions for nine yards in 41 snaps.#Cardinals Week 1 RB Usage

This result came as a surprise for many NFL fans after the Cardinals spent the number three overall pick in the 2026 NFL draft in April on Notre Dame’s Jeremiah Love.Even with the Cardinals using such a high draft pick on a running back, they did invest cap space with Allgeier, signing him to a 2-year, $12.25 million deal back in March just before the draft.Cardinals coach Mike LaFleur did acknowledge the split between Allgeier and Love and highlighted that is not a 100% workload for either running back.“I do know this: not one running back can take all 65 snaps," LaFleur said on azcardinals.com. “We've seen that story when guys are a little bit overloaded, and whether it hurts them in one year.”LaFleur also highlighted that making it through the season is key for both Allgeier and Love, and that a split is important for health."I think over time, one year, two years, whatever it is, being able to split those guys up, one, to keep them fresh throughout that game, but two, to keep them as healthy as they can for 17 games is the appropriate way to go," LaFleur said.AZ Cardinals RB Wk 1 Snap Count:

Allgeier has no bad blood with the rookie, even if it means less carries or snaps for the 5th-year player.“There’s no point in being a jerk about it,” Allgeier said on azcardinals.com. “That’s not going to get you anywhere in life, in this business, in this sport.”With that being said, Allgeier has had a steady five year NFL career, posting nearly 3000 rushing yards, along with 18 rushing touchdowns, in 68 games.Allgeier looks to keep making an impact on the Cardinals like many other Cougars continue to do in the NFL.
