Pelvic floor disorders affect nearly one in three women at some point in their lives. These disorders involve the muscles and connective tissues at the base of the pelvis that support the bladder, uterus, vagina, and intestines. When these muscles weaken or stretch, various uncomfortable or painful symptoms may develop.
Urogynecologists are physicians with advanced training in pelvic floor dysfunction. These specialists complete either a residency in obstetrics and gynecology followed by a three-year fellowship, or a residency in urology followed by a two-year fellowship. They treat several common conditions, including pelvic organ prolapse, stress incontinence, and urge incontinence.
Additional issues managed by these specialists include urinary urgency and frequency, fecal incontinence, and postpartum pelvic floor problems, particularly following significant tears.
Treatment options are often non-invasive and cost-effective. Common treatment plans include pelvic floor physical therapy and the use of vaginal devices such as pessaries. While surgery remains an option when necessary, it is typically a joint decision between the patient and the healthcare professional.
Dr. Jolyn Hill, an associate professor and urogynecologist at University of Utah Health, stated that while these conditions are not life-threatening, they can completely alter a woman's quality of life. She noted that many patients endure symptoms like chronic incontinence or vaginal bulges for years before seeking care.
University of Utah Health is expanding its team of specialists to serve the Mountain West region, an area that previously had few specialists. The institution provides access to multiple urogynecologists with specialized training within an academic medical center focused on research and innovation.
