The Tremonton City Council held a meeting Tuesday evening to address several key municipal developments, including the introduction of new city staff and discussions regarding potential utility rate adjustments. The session covered topics ranging from public safety and budget adoption to infrastructure updates and community partnerships.
The Council welcomed two new members to the city staff, including Jamie Heiner as the new Finance Director and Jeremy Lance as the new City Planner. Additionally, Ben Greener was appointed to the Planning Commission for a term lasting through January 2028.
Regarding utility services, Curtis Roberts CPA presented a discussion concerning water, sewer, and treatment plant funds. The Council noted that current rates are not keeping pace with operating costs due to inflation and delayed adjustments. Early discussions included a possible water base rate adjustment of approximately $2 per month to maintain compliance obligations. Staff were also directed to review utility tier structures to encourage the use of secondary water for landscaping.
The Council adopted the tentative budget for fiscal year 2027. During budget discussions, Chief Cordova reported increased call volumes and more complex cases within the police department, prompting a discussion on the resources required to support city growth.
A new agreement was moved forward for Garland police services following unanimous approval from Garland. Under this contract, four Garland officers will join the department, and services will operate under the name Tremonton-Garland Police Department.
The Council also approved a resolution supporting Congressman Blake Moore's effort to rename the Tremonton Post Office in honor of Officers Lee Sorensen and Eric Estrada. The names will also be added to the state law enforcement memorial at the Capitol.
Public Works provided several project updates, noting that secondary water turns on May 11 and the Holmgren East secondary water expansion begins next week. The East Canal equalization basin is scheduled for completion around June 15, while culinary water line replacements on Tremont Street and 100 West are expected to finish by May 31.
Other community updates included the submission of Tremonton's Main Street America application and the approval of the 2026 Mugs and Bananas drag night event. The fire department is also finalizing an agreement to receive donated hazmat equipment from a local industrial partner.
