The Utah Department of Transportation is entering the final stages of the 5600 South mobility project in Weber County, a three-year initiative that began in the summer of 2023. The project, which aims to improve mobility through Roy and Riverdale, is nearing completion with a community milestone event scheduled to celebrate the infrastructure improvements.
Final Construction Activities
As the project approaches its August 2026 conclusion, UDOT announced on Aug. 20, 2026, that construction crews are currently performing final punch list work throughout the project corridor. This includes the anticipated installation of barrier-mounted sign bases along Freeway Park Drive, a task expected to take approximately one day and requiring one-way traffic with flagging operations. Drivers should anticipate intermittent, short-term lane or shoulder closures as crews conduct final inspections, electrical work, and minor project items.
Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety
The 5600 South project, which has been a focus of regional infrastructure efforts since its commencement in Summer 2023, has addressed significant pedestrian and bicycle safety needs. According to UDOT, crews have completed significant improvements including new sidewalks, shared-use paths, and enhanced crosswalks. To increase visibility and alert drivers to the presence of bicyclists, the project also implemented green pavement markings at select locations throughout the corridor.
New Safety Signals Installed
A key component of the safety upgrades involves the installation of High-Intensity Activated Crosswalk signals, or HAWK signals. UDOT reported that an upgraded HAWK signal has been completed near Roy Elementary School at 2200 West, facing southeast. Additionally, a new HAWK signal, pedestrian crossing, and improved area near 2100 West and Roy Junior High have been established to provide a safer way for pedestrians to cross busy roadways by stopping traffic when the signal is activated.
Raised Median Improvements
To improve traffic flow and reduce conflict points, crews installed six raised medians throughout the corridor. These medians are located at the intersections of I-15 Single Point Urban Interchange (SPUI), 5600 South, 1900 West, and 3500 West. UDOT noted that these medians are designed to prevent severe crashes and help drivers navigate the area more safely by using designated intersections and median openings for left turns or U-turns.
Property Restoration and Nearby Work
Individual property restoration is now complete, and UDOT stated that no additional work is anticipated on or adjacent to private properties. Property owners may now proceed with their own remaining restoration tasks, which may include repairs to park strips, sprinkler and irrigation systems, mailbox installation, and general landscape maintenance. While the 5600 South project winds down, several other UDOT projects remain under construction in the surrounding Weber County area, including work on I-84 and 4400 South in Riverdale.
Community Milestone Event
To mark the project's completion, UDOT is hosting a community milestone event. The open house will be held in conjunction with Roy Elementary School's Back-to-School Night, allowing residents to visit with the project team, view project displays, and learn about the completed improvements. The event will also offer a complimentary sweet treat to community members.
