An extreme heat warning has been issued for the Northern Wasatch Front, Salt Lake Valley, Tooele and Rush Valleys, and Utah Valley. The National Weather Service Salt Lake City UT stated that dangerously hot conditions with temperatures as high as 105 degrees are expected.
The warning is in effect from noon on Saturday through 9 PM MDT Sunday. Residents should expect warm overnight lows in the low to mid 70s, which will offer little relief from the heat.
Heat related illnesses increase significantly during extreme heat events. Officials recommend drinking plenty of fluids, staying in air-conditioned rooms, and staying out of the sun. It is also advised to check on relatives and neighbors.
To reduce risks during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Those overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is considered an emergency and requires a call to 9 1 1.
Precautions should be taken when outside, such as wearing lightweight and loose fitting clothing. It is advised to limit strenuous activities to the early morning or evening. Additionally, people should not leave young children and pets in unattended vehicles, as car interiors can reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes.
