Early life and family background
According to an announcement from the Salina Sun, Nelson died surrounded by his wife, children, and extended family. Born on August 24, 1956, in Gunnison, Utah, Nelson grew up on a family farm and cattle ranch where he developed a passion for the Western way of life.
Religious service and marriage history
Nelson served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Dublin, Ireland, after attending Snow College. He and his wife, Leslee Mellor Nelson, were married and sealed in the Manti Temple on May 20, 1975, celebrating their 48th anniversary less than a month before his death.
Professional career and local leadership
In addition to his work with the family's cattle and trucking operations, including Nelson Sunbeam Coal in Salina, Nelson was active in local leadership. He served as President of the Brown’s Hole Grazing Association for nearly 20 years and held various roles on water board associations.

Funeral services will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 20, 2026, at the Redmond LDS Ward Chapel. A viewing is scheduled for Friday evening, June 19, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., and Saturday morning from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Burial will follow at the Redmond Cemetery.
