The Dallas Mavericks have reportedly hired Dusty May as their next head coach following his tenure at Michigan. May previously led the Wolverines program back to national prominence, including a national title win during the current season.
With May moving to Dallas, interest has turned toward the Mavericks' potential moves with the No. 9 pick in the 2026 NBA Draft. According to NBA insider Marc Stein, discussions have occurred regarding the Mavericks potentially trading down with the Oklahoma City Thunder, which holds picks No. 12 and 17.
In a recent mock draft projection, the Mavericks are slated to select Aday Mara at the ninth spot. Mara, a former UCLA player who transferred to Michigan, served as a defensive anchor for the Wolverines' national championship run. The 7-foot-3 center is noted for his shot-blocking abilities and could provide defensive support alongside former No. 1 overall pick Cooper Flagg.
The Mavericks may also consider other former Michigan players if Mara is unavailable, including Yaxel Lendeborg or Morez Johnson Jr. This group of players was instrumental in the Wolverines' dominant performance during the NCAA Tournament.
Other notable projections in the mock draft include AJ Dybantsa being selected by Utah at No. 2 and Cameron Boozer projected to go to Memphis at No. 3.
