The Utah Transit Authority (UTA) is seeking information from interested parties regarding bus farebox solutions, according to a September 2 statement. The Request for Information (RFI) aims to help the agency better understand the current marketplace, available technologies, and estimated costs for upgrading or replacing existing fareboxes.
UTA is looking to gather information on a variety of technical approaches and product specifications. The agency is interested in solutions ranging from traditional mechanical cash-only fareboxes to electronic models with cash validation and transaction reporting capabilities.
Requested information includes details on product maturity, maintenance requirements, expected service life, and interoperability with other transit systems. UTA is specifically interested in how solutions might integrate with vehicle systems, communications networks, automatic passenger counters, and back-office reporting systems. The agency also expressed interest in emerging technologies that could improve security, data collection, and operational efficiency.
The agency currently operates an electronic fare collection system that utilizes ticket vending machines, basic fareboxes, validators, and mobile fare payment capabilities. The goal of this research is to evaluate modernization options that maintain or improve compatibility with the existing infrastructure.
Interested parties may submit questions via the Bonfire portal until 5:00 p.m. MDT on Monday, September 21, 2026. The deadline for submitting formal responses is 5:00 p.m. MDT on Monday, September 28, 2026.
This RFI is an information-gathering tool for market research and does not constitute a formal solicitation or a commitment to issue a Request for Proposal. UTA will review responses to assist in understanding the marketplace but will not score or rate the submissions.
