The Utah High School Activities Association Board of Trustees has finalized new classifications and regions for member schools following an appeals process regarding the 2019-2021 alignment. The decision, finalized by the board on Aug. 7, 2026, follows a period of legislative discussion regarding the necessity of proactive planning to support Utah's rapid growth, which was highlighted by Senator Curtis in January 2025.
School Realignments Approved
The UHSAA Board of Trustees met to hear and review appeals from four member schools regarding the alignment originally adopted by the board in December. Following the hearing of these appeals, the board approved several specific movements for member institutions across different classifications and sports.
Specific School Changes
According to the UHSAA, East High School has been moved to 5A Region 6 for all sports with the exception of football. West High School will undergo a specific change for football only, moving to 6A Region 2.
Other significant shifts include Jordan High School, which has been moved to 6A Region 3 for all sports and activities. Park City High School has been transitioned to 5A Region 8 for all sports and activities, excluding football. Additionally, Milford High School has been moved to 1A Region 20 for all sports and activities except for football.
The Appeals Process
The UHSAA board's decision-making process included a formal appeal period. Per UHSAA policy, the four member schools submitted their appeals to the Board of Trustees during a meeting held on Jan. 24.
These appeals were part of the broader 2019-2021 alignment framework. The board's ruling ensures that the placement of member schools for the specified period is codified on the official UHSAA website.
The Importance of Planning
The necessity of long-term planning in the state was a subject of discussion by Utah officials earlier in the cycle. In a press release dated Jan. 15, 2025, Senator Curtis emphasized that proactive planning is critical to supporting the ongoing growth occurring throughout Utah.
Organizational Background
The UHSAA continues to serve as the leadership organization for high school athletic and fine arts activities across the state. Since 1927, the organization has overseen the development of education-based interscholastic activities designed to assist student success.
The association currently reaches 156 member schools and involves nearly 100,000 participants in various programs. The UHSAA sanctions 10 boys' sports, 10 girls' sports, and various fine arts programs including music, theatre/drama, and speech/debate across six different classifications.
