The No. 12 Utah Utes defeated the Kansas Jayhawks 41-24 on October 9 in front of a sold out crowd at Rice-Eccles Stadium. While Kansas remained within three points late in the third quarter, Utah pulled away with two fourth-quarter scores to secure the victory.
Utah established an early 14-0 lead in the first quarter through a 5-yard rushing touchdown by Wayshawn Parker and a 12-yard run by Devon Dampier. Kansas recovered momentum late in the second quarter when Isaiah Marshall scored his first career touchdown on a six-yard run, followed by a 34-yard field goal from Martin Connington as time expired in the first half to bring the score to 21-17.
In the third quarter, Utah extended their lead to 27-17 following a 15-play, 82-yard drive completed by a touchdown pass from Dampier to Ricky Johnson. Kansas responded with a 29-yard touchdown pass from Marshall to Nik McMillan, narrowing the deficit to 27-24 with 27 seconds remaining in the third quarter.
The fourth quarter saw Utah pull away with two touchdowns, including a 90-yard touchdown run by Wayshawn Parker with 7:24 remaining. Kansas was held scoreless during the final period and was stopped on downs twice deep in Utah territory.
Quarterback Isaiah Marshall recorded a career-high 333 passing yards on 19-of-37 completions, throwing touchdowns to Nik McMillan and Dylan Edwards. Marshall also recorded 21 rushing yards and his first career rushing touchdown. Cam Pickett was the Jayhawks' top receiver with eight receptions for 134 yards. Dylan Edwards contributed 22 rushing yards on nine attempts.
The loss leaves Kansas with a 2-3 record (0-2 in the Big 12), while Utah moves to 5-0 (2-0 in the Big 12).
The Jayhawks are scheduled to play their second Big 12 Conference road game on Saturday, Oct. 17, against the Kansas State Wildcats in Manhattan, Kansas. The kickoff is slated for 11 a.m. CT on FS1.
