The Colorado River serves as a critical component of Utah’s water security, supporting 40 million people across seven U.S. states and two Mexican states, according to the Utah Division of Water Resources.
Ecological and Agricultural Importance
The river system, which includes Lake Mead and Lake Powell, provides water for 5.5 million acres of agricultural land and sustains 30 endemic fish species, including four that are classified as endangered or threatened. The Colorado River originates in Rocky Mountain National Park near Grand Lake, Colorado, and spans 1,450 miles.
Water Allocation and Compact Agreements
Under the 1922 Colorado River Compact, water is divided between the Upper Basin and Lower Basin. Within the Upper Basin, Utah is allocated 23% of the water, alongside Colorado (51.7%), Wyoming (14%), and New Mexico (11.25%). The Utah Division of Water Resources noted that despite drought periods, Upper Basin states have met or exceeded their obligation to maintain river flow at Lee Ferry above a specific aggregate threshold.
Regional Growth and Conservation Needs
As the Southwest remains the fastest-growing region in the nation, officials emphasize the need for aggressive conservation. Much of this growth is projected for Washington County in southwestern Utah, which is expected to reach a population of approximately 500,000 by 2065 from its current level of about 200,000.
