Two people were rescued from a pickup truck on Monday after attempting to drive across a river below Gunlock Falls, according to a November 3 report by Gephardt Daily.
A male and a female were attempting to cross the river in a Toyota Tacoma when they encountered deep, swift-moving water that prevented a safe crossing. As water entered the vehicle's cab, the occupants climbed onto the roof to escape the rising water and called 911 for help.
Washington County Search & Rescue personnel coordinated a technical swift-water rescue alongside firefighters and EMS from Gunlock Fire, Dammeron Valley Fire & Rescue, and Santa Clara – Ivins Fire & Rescue.
Rescuers established a tensioned high-line system anchored to trees on both riverbanks. Once the rope system was secured, a rescuer traversed the high line to reach the stranded individuals. Both occupants were wearing helmets and personal flotation devices before being secured to the rescue system and transported across the river to safety.
The Washington County Search & Rescue team thanked Gunlock Fire, Dammeron Valley Fire, and Santa Clara-Ivins Fire & Rescue for their teamwork during the operation. Officials reminded the public that rivers can be unpredictable and advised never to attempt to drive through swift-moving water.
