Wasatch County residents are eligible to purchase subsidized rain barrels as part of the RainHarvest program. The initiative aims to help Utahns collect rainwater from rooftops for use in gardens and landscaping, providing an affordable way to conserve water during periods of extreme drought and low snowpack.
The program provides 50-gallon Ivy Rain Barrels made from 100% recycled plastic. These barrels include features such as a locking lid, mosquito screen, and a 3/4 inch valve compatible with garden hoses. The units also possess linking capability to allow for the connection of multiple barrels.
Starting March 25, 2026, Wasatch County residents may order $60 rain barrels through the RainHarvest website while supplies last. Once the subsidized inventory is depleted, $88 rain barrels will be available to the general public. The sale window is scheduled to remain open until late April 2026.
To receive a subsidy, residents must first enter their address on the purchasing website to verify eligibility. Upon verification, users will receive a discount code to use during the final purchase step. Officials noted that receiving a discount code does not constitute a confirmed purchase.
The distribution of the barrels will take place during a single in-person event on Wednesday, May 6, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. The location for pickup is the Veteran's Memorial Park Parking Lot, situated across from the Heber Valley Railroad Depot at 415 S. 600 W. in Heber City.
Rain barrels will not be shipped to residents. The program highlights that rainwater harvesting is legal in Utah and can help reduce municipal water demand and decrease polluted runoff entering local rivers, lakes, and the Great Salt Lake.
