UCF coach Scott Frost expressed hope that a recent bye week will provide the Knights with the rest and recovery needed for a successful second half of the season, according to an October 19 report by the Orlando Sentinel. The team, currently 3-3, is scheduled to host No. 2 BYU on Saturday at Acrisure Bounce House Stadium.
The Knights used much of the time off to focus on rest and healing after dealing with various injuries during the first half of the season. Frost stated that the decision to give players time off was intended to ensure the team remains fresh for the stretch run. While the team participated in some lifting and running, they held only one practice last week.
Offensive tackle Preston Cushman noted that the break rejuvenated the players, stating his own body feels the best it has since the middle of fall camp. The Knights entered the bye week with several starters missing, including quarterback Alonza Barnett III, wide receiver Duane Thomas Jr., offensive linemen Jacob Maiava and Owen Spell, and linebacker Lewis Carter. Frost indicated he is not yet sure if Barnett or the other injured players will return to action this week, though he noted that some players may return this week and others a week later. Frost added that Barnett is making progress in his recovery from a significant hamstring injury suffered during the second game of the season against Pitt.
Keyone Jenkins has started the last four games in place of Barnett. Frost praised Jenkins' performance, noting that he has played better in every game he has played, though he noted the player is still gaining experience with the offense. Frost stated his goal is for the team to peak in late October and November rather than in September.
The upcoming matchup against No. 2 BYU features a Cougars team with a 6-0 record and a 3-0 record in the Big 12. The game is scheduled for Saturday at 3:30 at Acrisure Bounce House Stadium in Orlando.
