Congressman Blake Moore has introduced a bill to rename the Tremonton Post Office in honor of the late Sergeant Lee Sorensen and Officer Eric Estrada. The proposed legislation intends to recognize the service and dedication these individuals provided to public safety in their communities.
The bill designates the United States Postal Service facility located at 11 1 South Tremont Street, Tremonton, Utah 84337, as the Sorensen-Estrada Post Office. This effort is co-sponsored by Representatives Burgess Owens, Mike Kennedy, and Celeste Maloy.
Congressman Moore stated that while words cannot ease the pain of their passing, the memorial will serve as a testament to the impact the officers had on their neighbors. Utah State Senator Scott Sandall noted that the recognition at the building in the center of Tremonton would act as a constant reminder of the town's gratitude.
Utah State Representative Thomas Peterson added that naming the post office after these officers helps ensure their legacy and sacrifice are not forgotten. Tremonton Mayor Bret Rohde expressed that placing their names on a federal building creates a permanent and dignified memorial for their ultimate sacrifice.
Sergeant Lee Sorensen's career in law enforcement began 16 years ago with the Garland City police department. He served as an instructor for advanced law enforcement rapid response training and emergency medical services, frequently interacting with first responders throughout Box Elder County.
Officer Eric Estrada served the Logan, Box Elder, and North Park police departments during his time in law enforcement. He joined the Tremonton police force and was known for his dedication to patrolling and engaging directly with the community.
Garland Mayor Danny Austin remarked on how the community has used the loss of the two officers as an opportunity to come together. Tremonton-Garland Police Chief Dustin Cordova stated that a post office bearing their names ensures that future generations will learn of who these men were.
Support for the recognition also comes from Box Elder County and USPS Operations Manager Katie Evertsen, who noted that the dedication serves as a meaningful tribute to preserve their legacy.
