Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill announced on Sept. 4, 2026, that no criminal charges will be filed against officers involved in an officer-involved shooting that occurred on Sept. 2, 2025, in West Jordan. The incident resulted in the death of 26-year-old Elhelbay Adam Idrees.
In a press conference, Gill stated that the decision was based on a review of written statements voluntarily submitted by multiple officers, as well as civilian testimony. Investigators established that Idrees, who had prior weapon-related convictions and an outstanding parole warrant, arrived at a residence on Sept. 2. Residents of the home reported being threatened after seeing Idrees remove a firearm from a duffel bag, which prompted a 911 call.
West Jordan SWAT and multiple agencies responded to the scene, forming a Joint Special Operations Group (JSOG). During the standoff, negotiators attempted to persuade Idrees to surrender while officers worked to allow three females inside the home to exit safely. Police also deployed chemical gas into the residence in an attempt to contain the suspect.
Shortly before 9:21 p.m. on Sept. 2, 2025, Idrees emerged from a downstairs area holding a rifle. Although witnesses described the rifle as initially pointed down, Gill stated that officers perceived the weapon was being raised toward them. Officers reported being in fear for their lives and the safety of fellow officers when they opened fire.
The DA's decision concludes the criminal-prosecution review of the incident. The announcement did not address whether internal police discipline, civil litigation, or a federal review will follow, nor did it disclose if body-cam footage exists or will be released. The press briefing did not present additional forensic or video evidence beyond the statements reviewed.
