Members of the Utah Army National Guard participated in the annual Bryce Canyon Half Marathon and 5K run/walk on July 11, 2026, as part of a larger celebration of America's 250th anniversary. The event featured a downhill course stretching from Ruby's Inn to Cannonville, offering participants a scenic route through Bryce Canyon National Park.
Course Elevation and Route Details
The half marathon began at 6:00 a.m. at Ruby's Inn on Highway 63 in Bryce, Utah. Starting at an elevation of 7,652 feet, the course heads north before turning east onto National Scenic Byway 12. Runners traveled through Bryce Canyon National Park, where they were met with views of sandstone pinnacles and spires, before descending through the town of Tropic and ending in Cannonville at an elevation of 5,800 feet.
This point-to-point route provides a net elevation loss of 1,800 feet. To ensure participants avoided the extreme summer heat, organizers required all half-marathon runners to finish the race by 9:00 a.m. To facilitate the event, shuttle buses were provided to transport runners from Tropic and Cannonville to and from the race course.
Prizes and Participant Amenities
The competition included a significant prize pool, with a total $3,000 purse divided among the top five male and female competitors. According to race details, the cash prizes were distributed as follows: $500 for first place, $400 for second place, $300 for third place, $200 for fourth place, and $100 for fifth place. In addition to cash, the top three winners in each age category received medals.
All registered participants received a Bryce Canyon Half Marathon runner's shirt, fruit, bagels, water, and chocolate milk at the finish line's runner's corral. Support and Emergency Services
The half marathon course featured seven designated aid stations to support runners. These stations were located at the following intervals: Under the Dump at mile 2.3, Mossy Cave at mile 4.5, Harmon's Bus Stop at mile 6.1, a pizza place in Tropic at mile 8.4, Mecham Dugway at mile 9.7, Dale's Driveway at mile 10.9, and County Road Shed at mile 11.9.
Water and Gatorade were provided at the starting line and at each aid station. In addition to providing hydration, the aid stations offered access to porta-potties. For emergency situations, medical and security support was coordinated through Garfield Memorial Hospital, the Garfield County Sheriff's Department, the Garfield County Volunteer EMTs, and the Utah Highway Patrol.
5K Event and Logistics
In addition to the half marathon, the event offered a 5K run/walk option. This loop began and ended at Cannonville Park, providing a route along the road to Kodachrome State Park. Like the half marathon, the 5K was designed to accommodate walkers and runners in the scenic landscape.
Due to the race, local authorities implemented early morning road closures along Scenic Highway 12 and Highway 63 to ensure participant safety. The event's logistics included various amenities for the community, such as snacks for half-marathon runners at the finish line and a variety of lodging options in the surrounding Bryce Canyon and Escalante areas.
Registration and Certification
The race was limited to a maximum of 1,200 bibs to manage participation levels. Registration fees varied based on the time of enrollment, ranging from $55 during early bird periods to $100 for same-day in-person registration on Friday, July 10, 2026.
Organizers implemented a policy where any bibs not picked up by 8:00 p.m. MST on July 10th were released to standby runners. The event was officially certified by USA Track & Field.
