The Sevier County Road Department continues its mission to maintain the safety of the traveling public by overseeing more than 700 miles of Class B roads. These routes consist of paved, gravel, and dirt roads under the jurisdiction of Sevier County.
Department maintenance responsibilities
In addition to road surfaces, the department is responsible for the maintenance and improvement of bridges, road signs, and cattle guards.
New roadway encroachment regulations
The Board of Sevier County Commissioners adopted Chapter 152 regarding streets, sidewalks, and public places in 2026. This ordinance regulates roadway rights of way encroachment.
Permit requirements and legalities
Under this regulation, it is against the law to disturb county roads or rights of way without obtaining permission from the road supervisor through a permit process. Officials stated that this process is intended to save taxpayer money by reducing necessary repairs to county roads.
Encroachment permit fee structure
The department manages several types of encroachment permits with varying costs.
Class 1 and Class 2 Encroachment Permits cost $130, while Class 3 is available at no charge. Class 4 and Class 5 Encroachment Permits require a fee of $280. Additional fees include $115 for a first-time completion inspection, $60 for additional inspections, and fees for permit amendments or extensions.
