South Jordan residents and interested parties will have the opportunity to comment on the city's use of federal Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds and community needs at a public hearing scheduled for September 1, 2026. The hearing aims to gather feedback on how these funds should be used under CDBG guidelines to benefit underserved communities and provide services and projects.
Abagail Patonai, South Jordan’s Senior Accountant and CDBG Coordinator, stated that residents will also be able to review how the city used the funding over the past fiscal year. While the city receives one of the smallest allocations in the country, at approximately $245,500 annually, public input is considered key for directing funds effectively.
CDBG funds are typically used by the city to improve access for persons with disabilities, often through ADA-compliance projects such as installing audible push buttons at intersections or upgrading sidewalks. A small portion of the funds is also allocated to local non-profits that provide direct services, such as crisis support or housing, to qualified residents experiencing domestic violence or homelessness.
The public hearing is scheduled for September 1, 2026, at 6:30 p.m. at South Jordan City Hall, located at 1600 W. Towne Center Drive. The meeting may also be joined virtually via Zoom, though those attending via Zoom or phone may not comment during the public hearing; individuals wishing to comment must attend in person or submit written comments prior to the meeting.
The 2025 CAPER will be available for public review and comment from August 17, 2026, to September 16, 2026. It can be accessed on the city's website, via hard copy at City Hall, the Community Center, and the Public Works Building, or upon request. Comments may be submitted via email, in writing, or by calling the city through September 16, 2026.
