The West Side school board met on October 20 to discuss the installation of automated doors designed to assist those with handicap needs. The board reported that the project is expected to be completed by the end of the month.
Funding for the new doors has been secured through several grants and donations from community members and organizations. Contributors include The Lions Club, Stokes Marketplace, AgWest Farm Credit, and the Franklin County Medical Center Foundation.
The installation plan includes four doors: one at the main entrance of each school, plus an additional door at the southern entrance of the high school leading to the LDS seminary building. If funding allows, a fifth door may be installed in the new foyer located between the practice and Elwell Gym.
The installation process has faced delays because the new doors must be integrated into the existing school security systems. Officials noted that if a door is locked and the opening button is pressed, the motor could be damaged while fighting the lock.
During the meeting, the board held a brief discussion regarding the West Side Hall of Fame, which recognizes community members for their exemplary contributions to the school district. The board considered turning the community award into an annual event but decided to leave it as is due to concerns that such a change might cheapen the award. This distinction was made to ensure the award is not confused with the Athletic Hall of Fame, which is an annual event for students and coaches.
The remainder of the meeting involved a review of several internal policies, none of which were changed. The only modification made by the board was to officially end the current semester before the start of winter break, rather than after.
The meeting proceeded with each subject being addressed without the need for significant debate.
