Three area girls soccer programs are scheduled to begin the 6A state tournament on Tuesday, Oct. 13, according to an October 12 report. The opening round features a matchup between local rivals Lone Peak and Skyridge, alongside a contest between Lehi and Herriman.
The Lone Peak-Skyridge game is highlighted as a headliner, with No. 16 Skyridge traveling to host No. 1 Lone Peak for a 4 p.m. kickoff in Highland. The Knights, who hold a 14-3 record and an 8-0 record in Region 3, entered the postseason as the top seed in 6A and ranked No. 90 nationally on MaxPreps. As of an Oct. 5 ranking from the Daily Herald, the Knights maintained a 13-game winning streak.
Skyridge enters the tournament as the final qualifier in the 16-team field with a 2-13 record. The Falcons previously lost twice to the Knights during region play, with scores of 4-2 on Sept. 15 and 3-1 on Oct. 1. First-year head coach Jhoan Alvizo, a Spanish and Portuguese teacher, previously noted in an August preseason preview that Region 3 provides a significant challenge that prepares teams for the knockout stages.
In another matchup, No. 6 Lehi is scheduled to host No. 11 Herriman at 4 p.m. in Lehi. The Pioneers, led by third-year head coach Jonas Hartmann, finished with a 10-8 record and tied for second in Region 3. According to MaxPreps, Lehi has scored 45 goals and allowed 24 this season. Lehi previously defeated Herriman 2-0 during a preseason match on Aug. 13.
Winners from these opening matches are scheduled to advance to the quarterfinal games on Thursday, Oct. 15. The Lone Peak-Skyridge winner will face either No. 8 Layton or No. 9 Mountain Ridge in the quarterfinals, while the Lehi-Herriman winner will face either No. 3 Farmington or No. 14 Weber.
The tournament begins with all 6A first-round games scheduled for 4 p.m. on Tuesday, unless schools agree to a different time. While Lehi lost to Weber 3-2 on Aug. 25, the team did not face Farmington during the regular season.
Quarterfinal games for the 6A tournament are scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 15.
