The Department of Health Public Health of the Southwest Utah (SWUPHD) has confirmed a case of rabies in a bat found in Washington County. This marks the first rabid bat detection in the state this year.
Rabies is a serious viral disease that can be fatal once symptoms appear. Adrianna Vidal, an epidemiologist with SWUPHD, emphasizes the importance of seeking immediate medical attention if bitten or scratched by an animal suspected of being rabid. Additionally, the law in Utah mandates that all domestic dogs, cats, and raccoons be vaccinated against rabies to reduce the risk of exposure.
