The Children's Justice Center in Sevier County operates as a child-friendly facility designed to provide coordinated services during the child abuse investigative process. As a Sevier County government program within the Department of Human Services, the center aims to provide a comfortable atmosphere for children and families.
Center's mission and leadership
Director Karen O. Ashby leads the center, which focuses on decreasing secondary trauma that may be caused by the child protection and criminal justice systems.
Types of investigations handled
The program provides critical assistance with investigations involving physical abuse, sexual abuse, child homicide, abductions, shaken baby syndrome, and child abuse related to domestic violence. The center is designed to help children feel safe during the interview process.
Interview process and family support
During visits that last approximately one hour, investigators from law enforcement and child protective services meet with the child and parents to obtain statements and provide support. The facility also provides advocacy, crisis intervention, and referral services to assist families in coping with the aftermath of abuse.

Through coordinated services, involved agencies work together to promote the best interests of the child during protection and prosecution proceedings.
