The No. 2-ranked BYU Cougars hold a spotless 6-0 record at the midpoint of the 2026 football season, earning an easy A grade relative to preseason expectations according to a October 22 report. The program has never held such a lofty ranking at this stage of a season.
Tight end Walker Lyons, a transfer from USC, has become a notable first-year addition. Through six games, Lyons has recorded 18 receptions for 199 yards, including a game-winning touchdown against Notre Dame last season. His production is nearly on par with former tight end Carsen Ryan, who played in the NFL after a strong 2025 season. Other tight end additions include Oregon transfer Roger Saleapaga, who has recorded seven receptions for 110 yards.
The offensive line has seen significant updates, specifically at left tackle. Washington transfer Paki Finau secured the position during spring practice in March and has provided high performance grades through six games. Additionally, Oregon transfer Kyler Kasper has helped supplement the loss of former top receivers Chase Roberts and Parker Kingston, recording 20 receptions for 244 yards and three touchdowns through six games.
On the defensive side, linebacker Cade Uluave has become the team's top defender, leading the team in total tackles. He joined the team as a transfer and has been instrumental in the team's success. Additionally, Mississippi State transfer Jayven Williams has provided consistent coverage, frequently playing in nickel formations to match the performance of former third cornerback Mory Bamba.
BYU coach Kalani Sitake expressed pride in the team's preparation, specifically noting the importance of the week's work prior to the win over Notre Dame. Sitake also highlighted the readiness of Stanford transfer Zak Yamauchi, noting his ability to step in effectively during gameplay.
BYU will need to demonstrate continued improvement to maintain its perfect record and grade through the end of the season.
